How to Measure Your Dog for a Collar and Harness

White dog wearing a black harness

A collar or harness that fits well keeps your dog safe, comfortable and in control on every walk. Too loose and your dog can slip out; too tight and it can rub or restrict breathing. The good news: measuring takes less than two minutes.

What you need

  • A soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler)
  • Your dog, standing calmly
  • A treat or two for patience

Measuring for a collar

Wrap the tape around the middle of your dog’s neck, where the collar naturally sits. Slide two fingers under the tape — that is your collar size. For growing puppies, check the fit every couple of weeks.

Measuring for a harness

Measure the chest girth around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs. Many harnesses also list a neck measurement, taken around the base of the neck where it meets the shoulders. Compare both numbers with the size chart on the product page.

Between sizes?

For collars, choose the larger size and adjust it down. For harnesses, the chest measurement matters most — pick the size where your dog’s chest sits in the middle of the range. Still unsure? Contact our team and we will help you choose.
