Choosing the Right Bed for Your Dog or Cat

Pets sleep 12 to 16 hours a day, so the right bed makes a real difference to their comfort and joint health. Here is how to choose one they will love.

1. Watch how your pet sleeps

  • Curlers love round, bolstered or donut-style beds that feel snug.
  • Sprawlers need a flat, rectangular mattress-style bed with room to stretch.
  • Leaners enjoy beds with raised sides to rest their head on.

2. Get the size right

Measure your pet from nose to the base of the tail while lying down, then add 15–30 cm (6–12 in). Cats and small dogs that like to curl up can go a little smaller for a cozier feel.

3. Think about age and joints

Senior pets and large breeds benefit from thicker, supportive foam that keeps joints off the floor. Puppies and kittens do best with durable, easy-to-wash covers.

4. Make cleaning easy

Look for removable, machine-washable covers. Washing your pet’s bedding every one to two weeks helps control hair, odors and allergens.
