Breakaway Collars: Keeping Your Cat Safe

Tabby cat wearing a red collar

Cats climb, squeeze and explore — which means a standard collar can get caught on branches or furniture. A breakaway (or “quick-release”) collar is designed to open under pressure, so your cat can free itself if the collar snags.

Why ID still matters

Even indoor cats sometimes slip outside. A collar with an ID tag showing your phone number is one of the fastest ways to get a lost cat home. Pair it with a microchip for the best protection.

How to fit a cat collar

  • Measure around your cat’s neck with a soft tape.
  • Add about 2 cm (¾ in) — you should be able to slide two fingers under the collar.
  • Check that the breakaway buckle opens with a firm pull.
  • Re-check the fit regularly, especially for growing kittens.

Getting your cat used to it

Start with short sessions while your cat is relaxed, reward with treats and play, and gradually increase wear time. Most cats adjust within a few days.
