Back-Clip, Front-Clip or Step-In? How to Choose the Right Dog Harness

A harness spreads pressure across the chest instead of the throat, which makes it a comfortable choice for most dogs — especially small breeds, flat-faced dogs and dogs that pull. But there are several styles, and the right one depends on your dog. Here’s how to choose.

Back-clip harnesses

The leash attaches between the shoulder blades. They’re easy to put on and comfortable for calm walkers and small dogs. The downside: they don’t discourage pulling, and some dogs pull harder against them.

Best for: small dogs, relaxed walkers, flat-faced breeds.

Front-clip (no-pull) harnesses

The leash attaches at the chest. When the dog pulls, the harness gently turns them back toward you, which helps reduce pulling during training.

Best for: enthusiastic pullers and dogs in leash training.

Dual-clip harnesses

Offer both a front and back ring, so you can switch depending on the walk — or use a double-ended leash for extra control.

Vest harnesses

Padded vests cover more of the chest and back, spreading pressure widely. Many include reflective trim and a grab handle.

Best for: small and medium dogs, cats, comfort-first walks.

Step-in harnesses

Your dog steps in with the front paws and you clip it over the back — no pulling it over the head. Great for head-shy dogs.

Tactical harnesses

Heavy-duty nylon with a strong handle and attachment points for pouches. Popular for hiking, training and large active dogs.

How to measure

  1. Chest girth: around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
  2. Neck: around the base of the neck.
  3. Weight: useful for checking against size charts.

Check each product’s chart and our Size Guide. Between sizes? Size up and adjust the straps.

The two-finger fit test

You should be able to slide two fingers under every strap. The harness shouldn’t rub behind the front legs or slide sideways when your dog moves. Check the fit again as puppies grow or if your dog’s weight changes.

Safety tips

  • Choose reflective trim for early-morning and evening walks.
  • Remove the harness at home so it doesn’t rub or snag.
  • For car travel, clip a seat belt tether to the harness — never to a collar.
